MilCIS 2024This recent MoU between Hanwha Ocean and the Australian Industry & Defence Network (AIDN) represents a strategic move to bolster Hanwha’s production capabilities within Australia, particularly to foster long-term partnerships with local defence firms. Hanwha Ocean’s interest in expanding its naval shipbuilding operations in Australia aligns with the broader goal of increasing Australia’s sovereign shipbuilding capabilities. Through this MoU, Hanwha aims to establish a network of Australian companies to enhance its future projects, providing opportunities for domestic suppliers, small-to-medium enterprises, and specialist defence contractors.

Hanwha Defence Australia (HDA), Hanwha’s established land defence division in Australia, has set a strong precedent with significant investments in Geelong and the supply of advanced land defence solutions for the Australian Army, including armoured vehicles and artillery. These contributions highlight Hanwha’s ongoing commitment to Australia’s defence ecosystem.

By signing this MoU, Hanwha Ocean, formerly DSME, showcases a rebranded approach and commitment to advanced maritime solutions. Leveraging decades of experience, Hanwha Ocean brings expertise in designing and constructing state-of-the-art naval vessels with an emphasis on technology, innovation, and knowledge transfer to local partners. This agreement potentially paves the way for a more collaborative environment in Australia’s defence sector, promising economic growth, enhanced defence capabilities, and sustained job creation across the region.
