Milrem Robotics, a global leader in robotic and autonomous systems, together with Ukrainian defence technology company Frontline, has successfully integrated the BURIA remote weapon station (RWS) — armed with a 40mm automatic grenade launcher — onto the THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV).

The integration was validated during live-fire trials in Ukraine under operationally relevant conditions, marking a major milestone in unmanned combat support capabilities. The BURIA RWS combined with Milrem’s reliable THeMIS platform enabled precise target engagement at distances up to 1,100 metres, while ensuring operators remained safely out of harm’s way.

Industry Leaders Comment on the Integration

“This successful demonstration verifies the reliability and accuracy of the BURIА–THeMIS integration,” said Paul Clayton, Director of Industrial Partnerships at Milrem Robotics. “It highlights the expanding role of robotic platforms in improving tactical effectiveness and operator safety on the modern battlefield.”

During the trial, the THeMIS Combat showcased outstanding stability and target tracking, confirming the accuracy and versatility of the platform in handling diverse kinetic payloads.

“This is a vivid example of Ukrainian innovation combined with European engineering,” said Yevhen Tretiak, CEO of Frontline. “At Frontline, we believe the future of modern warfare belongs to robotic systems. BURIA is part of our vision for a robotic frontline — where drones perform defensive and offensive operations while soldiers remain out of harm’s way.”

Battlefield Deployment and Future Plans

  • Further testing and tactical validation will continue in the coming weeks to assess performance across a variety of battlefield scenarios.

  • Data collected will guide system upgrades and deployment strategies.

  • The THeMIS UGV was the first in its class to be deployed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the war against Russia, and is recognised as the most capable UGV currently operating in Ukraine.

The BURIA RWS, in service since January 2025 and now in serial production, is already being integrated into combat support units, backed by a dedicated training program for frontline deployment.
