The Italian Coast Guard has strengthened its aerial fleet by adding a new ATR42-600 Maritime Patrol (MP) aircraft, through a contract with Leonardo. This acquisition supports the Coast Guard’s fleet renewal program, which already includes ATR 42-400 and ATR 42-500 MPs. Based on the ATR42-600 commercial aircraft, this latest MP version brings advanced surveillance and communication capabilities, meeting complex operational needs along Italy’s coastline and international waters.
Key Features of the ATR42-600 MP:
• Advanced Surveillance & Communication: Equipped with Leonardo’s ATOS (Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance) system, the ATR42 MP can handle multi-domain sensors and delivers real-time information transmission, enhancing situational awareness for operators.
• Multifunctional Role: The aircraft will undertake various missions including maritime patrol, search and rescue (SAR), anti-trafficking operations, and territorial waters protection.
• Operational Efficiency: Known for reliability and low life-cycle costs, the ATR42 MP is designed for extended mission durations, often exceeding eight hours, with an ergonomic layout for crew efficiency.
The Italian Coast Guard’s expansion of its capabilities with the ATR42-600 MP highlights Italy’s investment in modernizing its fleet with advanced, versatile, and cost-effective solutions, enhancing its ability to manage diverse and long-duration missions.
