Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS (KONGSBERG) has signed a fifth follow-on contract with Japan for the delivery of additional Joint Strike Missiles (JSM) to equip the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s fleet of F-35A fighter aircraft.

The contract is valued at more than NOK 800 million and further strengthens the long-standing defence relationship between KONGSBERG and Japan’s Ministry of Defense.

The JSM is a fifth-generation, stealth, air-to-surface missile designed to be carried internally within the F-35A, preserving the aircraft’s low-observable characteristics while providing long-range precision strike capability.

“KONGSBERG is proud to have received another order from Japan’s Ministry of Defense to provide the JSM to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. This represents another important milestone for the JSM programme, and our relationship with Japan continues to grow stronger with this fifth follow-on contract,” said Øyvind Kolset, Executive Vice President, Missiles & Space at Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

The Joint Strike Missile has now been selected by Japan, Norway, Australia, Germany and the United States, underscoring its role as a key precision strike capability for F-35 operators worldwide.
