Aiming for Zero Trust Leadership in Europe

Leonardo has announced a major step toward European cybersecurity leadership with the acquisition of a 24.55% stake in SSH Communications Security Corporation, a Finnish cybersecurity firm renowned for its cryptographic and secure communication technologies. The €20 million deal supports Leonardo’s goal to become a frontrunner in the “Zero Trust” cybersecurity paradigm.

Strategic Alignment with Leonardo’s Industrial Plan

This investment aligns with Leonardo’s updated Industrial Plan (March 2025) and expands its presence in the international cyber solutions market. With this move, Leonardo becomes the only industrial investor in SSH, further consolidating its role in advancing Trusted Cyber Security across Europe.

Cybersecurity represents one of the strategic development areas of our industrial plan. With this acquisition, Leonardo increases its portfolio in an international perspective, positioning itself as a reference point to lead the Zero Trust revolution in Europe,” said Roberto Cingolani, CEO and General Manager of Leonardo.

Who is SSH Communications Security?

SSH, best known for developing the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol, is a European leader in secure access and data protection technologies, with a global customer base across:

  • Governments

  • Critical infrastructure operators

  • Financial institutions

  • Large enterprises

Key areas of expertise include:

  • Privileged Access Management (PAM) for secure access to sensitive systems and cloud environments

  • Quantum-safe encryption technologies

  • Wide Area Network (WAN) encryption certified for government and military environments

  • Strong authentication and centralised key management

With more than 30 years of experience, SSH delivers cybersecurity solutions via a strong partner network across North America, Europe, and Asia.

A ‘Made in Europe’ Zero Trust Ecosystem

Beyond equity investment, Leonardo and SSH will form a strategic global partnership, governed by a cooperation agreement. Under this arrangement:

  • Leonardo receives worldwide exclusivity to integrate SSH solutions into its Zero Trust cybersecurity offering,

  • Excludes the Scandinavian market, where SSH maintains its independence

  • Focuses on delivering future-proof, integrated cybersecurity platforms within Europe

Together, they aim to build a “Made in Europe” Zero Trust ecosystem, realising the principle:

“Never trust, always verify.”
