• A-29 Super Tucano adds counter-UAS operations to its mission portfolio

• Upgrade leverages existing sensors and systems, available to current and future operators

Embraer, a global leader in aerospace, has announced a major expansion of the A-29 Super Tucano’s mission capabilities with the addition of counter-UAS roles to effectively and affordably address modern unmanned threats.

Using the aircraft’s proven operational features and new sensor integrations — including specialised datalinks for initial targeting, EO/IR laser tracking and designation, guided rockets, and wing-mounted .50-calibre machine guns — Embraer’s new Operational Concept (CONOPS) enables operators to incorporate counter-UAS missions seamlessly into their existing mission sets.

“We continue to expand the A-29’s capabilities to address the most recent challenges faced by many nations worldwide,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “Modern conflicts have highlighted the urgent need for effective, low-cost solutions to fight drones. The A-29 is the ideal tool to counter UAS while maintaining its extensive mission set, which includes close air support, armed reconnaissance, advanced training, and more.”

The A-29 Super Tucano is a rugged, versatile turboprop platform capable of operating from unimproved runways and forward bases in harsh environments. It leads its class globally, surpassing 600,000 flight hours.

The aircraft fulfils a broad spectrum of missions including advanced pilot training, Close Air Support (CAS), air patrol, air interdiction, JTAC training, armed ISR, border surveillance, and escort duties. Its combination of operational flexibility, low life cycle cost, and proven performance has led 22 air forces worldwide to select the Super Tucano.

Equipped with advanced avionics, precise targeting systems, modern weapons integration, and a robust communications suite, the A-29 delivers multi-mission effectiveness with reduced maintenance demands and high availability — all while maintaining low operating costs.
