New software suite creates a “universal translator” for military systems

HENSOLDT has launched its MDOcore software suite, marking a major milestone in the move toward software-defined defence solutions. Serving as the digital backbone for multi-domain operations (MDO), MDOcore delivers the first end-to-end, cross-domain integration of sensor and effector systems. This capability speeds up battlefield decision-making and significantly shortens the time from reconnaissance to effect.

“HENSOLDT CEO Oliver Dörre emphasised the importance of data in modern conflict: “Data is as important as ammunition on the battlefield. With MDOcore, we are creating a key capability for networked data fusion and analysis – independent of non-European platforms. In this way, we are securing sovereignty over our own mission data and making a decisive contribution to technological sovereignty.”

Developed from real operational experience and built around software-centred defence principles, MDOcore can update or expand modules while in use—such as when new threats emerge. This enables rapid adjustments, including short-notice updates during deployments, supporting the agile capability development required for modern military environments. A functional prototype featuring multi-domain data fusion and AI-enabled evaluation has already undergone successful testing.

MDOcore serves as a “universal translator” across complex defence networks. It allows disparate systems—including German radar, French air defence assets and US command or weapon delivery systems—to communicate seamlessly and share data in real time.

Built on an open, modular architecture, MDOcore aligns with modern defence programme standards and avoids dependence on single providers. It is designed for intuitive operation: users can interact through voice input or text commands, receiving context-rich information that exceeds traditional situational awareness.

Engineered for future technology integration, the system is prepared for cloud connectivity, swarm operations and eventually quantum computing—ensuring readiness for the challenges of tomorrow’s battlefield.

Sven Heursch, Head of Software-Defined Defence & Digitalisation at HENSOLDT, said: “MDOcore is more than a software suite – it is the foundation of a new way of thinking in defence technology. By decoupling hardware, software, data and algorithms, we are creating a modular architecture that is interoperable, scalable and future-proof. This creates a sovereign European defence infrastructure while strengthening long-term system capability.”

With MDOcore, HENSOLDT moves from sensor provider to supplier of real-time, data-centric defence architectures. By combining established expertise with advanced data analysis, the company is delivering a new level of digital battlefield intelligence.
