Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has reached a major milestone in India’s submarine modernisation programme, entering official contract negotiations with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the construction of six advanced German-designed submarines under Project 75(I).
Strengthening India’s Naval Capabilities
Project 75(I) is a cornerstone in India’s efforts to enhance its naval capabilities, with the planned submarines to be built in cooperation with MDL in Mumbai. The partnership highlights India’s “Make in India” initiative through local manufacturing and technology transfer while deepening strategic ties between India and Germany.
Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS, said:
“I am convinced that India will develop into a global centre for submarine technology and manufacturing. Our partnership with MDL is based on trust, innovation, and shared goals that go far beyond individual contracts.”
Key Developments in Project 75(I)
TKMS and MDL completed all services for the Concept Design Agreement (CDA) by 31 August 2025.
TKMS has submitted binding offers covering engineering services, Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, and flexible combat system solutions.
The negotiations aim to elevate Indian-German naval cooperation while boosting India’s defence industry.
Growing Global Submarine Portfolio
For TKMS, the start of negotiations in India follows a series of international successes:
Germany ordered four additional submarines at the end of 2024.
Singapore signed a contract for two more submarines in 2025.
As of 30 June 2025, TKMS’s order backlog reached €18.5 billion, reinforcing its strong market position.
