Sikorsky Awarded $43M U.S. Army Contract

Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company (NYSE: LMT), has been awarded a new U.S. Army contract valued at $43 million to advance Black Hawk modernisation efforts. The contract focuses on enhancing the helicopter’s airframe and developing a digital backbone to enable rapid unmanned aerial systems (UAS) integration.

Focus on Digital Backbone and UAS Integration

A key component of the modernisation is the digital backbone, designed to support a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA). This backbone allows for fast capability insertion and future mission adaptability. The Army contract also prioritises launched effects integration, enabling the Black Hawk to deploy UAS and other advanced capabilities as early as 2026.

Model-Based Systems Engineering

The program includes model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to create a digital thread of the Black Hawk helicopter. This approach will streamline design, testing, and maintenance, making upgrades more efficient and cost-effective while improving long-term sustainment.

Enhancements for Future Missions

Modernisation will upgrade the helicopter’s engine, airframe, and main fuel systems, giving the Black Hawk greater payload capacity and range. Future updates will include flight control improvements with autonomy and AI assistance to boost pilot safety and mission effectiveness.

Hamid Salim, vice president of Army and Air Force Systems at Sikorsky, said:

“Sikorsky is ready to implement new technologies that will strengthen the combat-proven Black Hawk and give U.S. Army soldiers greater advantage in areas like the Indo-Pacific.”

Delivering a Modernised Black Hawk

Working with a broad U.S. supplier base, Sikorsky is already fielding technology for today’s Black Hawks. This includes upturned exhaust systems II kits, which enhance infrared suppression, reduce weight, and improve reliability and maintainability — all of which will benefit the modernised Black Hawk.

Commitment to U.S. Army Capabilities

“Together with our team of hundreds of American suppliers, we are committed to delivering the most advanced and capable modernised Black Hawk to the U.S. Army,” Salim added.

With these upgrades, the Black Hawk helicopter will remain a central component of U.S. Army aviation and a vital asset for future operations.
