Beaufort, the market leader in integrated survival technology solutions and services, has equipped its 100th F-35 pilot in Japan with a fully tailored Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) ensemble, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing support of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and the global F-35 Lightning II programme.

As the sole source provider of below-the-neck AFE for all variants of F-35, one of the world’s most advanced fifth-generation multi-role fighter aircraft, Beaufort delivers a dependable, technology-differentiated solution that enhances pilot safety, performance, and survivability. In the Asia-Pacific region, where operational demands and strategic complexities continue to evolve, this milestone underscores Beaufort’s essential contribution to the operational readiness of Japan’s F-35 fleet and its long-term role in regional defence capability.
Japan, a key operator of F-35 with up to 147 A and B variant aircraft already operational or on order, continues to advance its self-defence capabilities amid growing regional security challenges. Its involvement in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a trilateral partnership with the UK and Italy to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet, further consolidates the island nation’s position as a global leader in defence innovation.
In step with GCAP and the evolution of sixth-generation air power, Beaufort is advancing the development of sixth-generation Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) through patented innovation and a future-focused approach to pilot survivability. Drawing on deep operational insight and a proven track record in mission-critical systems, Beaufort is designing the next evolution of integrated protection to meet the demands of future air combat platforms. Continued investment in innovation ensures Beaufort remains at the forefront of fully qualified, human-centric survivability solutions.
“Reaching this 100-pilot milestone in Japan is a proud moment and an affirmation of our commitment to protecting lives and enabling mission success in high-threat, high-performance environments,” said Nick Mulhall, Chief Commercial Officer at Beaufort. “Our unique Perfect Fit process ensures every pilot receives an individually tailored ensemble that integrates seamlessly with the cockpit with aircraft life support systems meeting the demands of modern multi-domain operations.”
The AFE ensemble includes a flight jacket, coverall, anti-g trousers, and immersion protection garments, each custom-fitted through a 10-day, two-stage process within a dedicated F-35 Pilot Fit Facility (PFF). A precision fit is critical to ensure the equipment performs reliably in extreme conditions, including sustained high-G manoeuvres where Anti-G Straining Manoeuvres (AGSM) a source of significant pilot fatigue, are eliminated or substantially reduced.
While JASDF pilots currently travel to the US for fitting, Beaufort is exploring opportunities to establish a local pilot fitting and support capability in Japan. This would build on the company’s existing in-country servicing infrastructure for Submarine Escape Immersion Equipment (SEIE) provided to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, further reinforcing its long-standing support across air, sea, and sub-sea domains.
Operational excellence remains central to the company’s approach, delivering perfect quality, on time, and at competitive cost. With a global team of highly skilled professionals, Beaufort continues to grow faster than the markets in which it operates, backed by a clear commitment to innovation, regional partnership, and long-term mission success.
Meet Beaufort at DSEI Japan 2025, booth number H7-442 where the company will showcase its F-35 AFE capability and share insights into its ongoing work developing next-generation aircrew protection systems for the GCAP and beyond
