Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and U.S.-based defence technology company, Epirus, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore high-power microwave (HPM) defence technology against unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

HPM systems generate electromagnetic interference to disrupt and disable electronics, providing a cutting-edge solution against increasingly sophisticated “dark drones,” including fibre-optic and AI-controlled UAVs. This technology allows simultaneous neutralisation of multiple advanced UAS threats.

Under the partnership, DSTA and Epirus will engage in technical knowledge exchange, as well as joint testing and evaluation of HPM system performance across varied deployment scenarios. Trials will assess effectiveness against both single drones and swarm attacks in diverse environments, reinforcing Singapore’s counter-electronics and critical asset protection capabilities.

DSTA Chief Executive Ng Chad-Son said, “As asymmetric threats continue to grow in scale and sophistication, DSTA is committed to exploring novel solutions to ensure we are prepared for the threats of tomorrow. We look forward to working with innovative partners like Epirus, tapping on their expertise to provide a decisive advantage for the Singapore Armed Forces.”

Epirus CEO Andy Lowery added, “Asymmetric threats are transforming warfare globally. The threat posed by mass-producible unmanned systems demands a coordinated global response underpinned by advanced one-to-many defence solutions. This partnership with Singapore marks a significant milestone in Epirus’ international expansion into the Indo-Pacific region.”
