Following the news that Spain’s Indra and TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) have initiated the installation of the first of the 23 Lanza-N radars for the Indian Navy;

“The Lanza-N radars are expected to augment the Indian Navy’s surveillance and air defense capabilities. The ELM-2248 MF-STAR and RAWL-02/LW-08 are the main radars now installed on the frontline destroyers of the Kolkata-class and Visakhapatnam-class. It is anticipated that the new Lanza-N radar will replace the latter system installed on these in-service destroyers during their scheduled refit or mid-life modernization program.
“The Lanza-N radar system may also be deployed onboard the Nilgiri-class frigates, which are already in advanced stages of construction. There is a strong possibility that these radars will also be installed on the Navy’s future Project-18 Next-Generation Destroyer (NGD). Moreover, the acquisition of new radar is also in line with the Navy’s Maritime Capability Perspective Plan (MCPP), which places a priority on expanding the capabilities of naval platforms in addition to increasing fleet size numerically.
“As part of the contract signed in 2020, Indra will deliver three complete radars and the core system elements for the other twenty radars, which will be locally assembled and integrated by TASL over the next decade. The Lanza-N radars being supplied to the Indian Navy have been tailored to deliver optimum performance in the high humidity and extreme heat environment of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).”
