The Belgian Government has selected the Pilatus PC-7 MKX Training System as the new basic flight training solution for the Belgian Air Force. The programme includes a fleet of 18 PC-7 MKX aircraft and an integrated Ground-Based Training System, replacing the existing aircraft used for the basic training of military pilots. Aircraft deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.
On 27 November 2025, the Belgian Government approved the award of a comprehensive 20-year service contract to Pilatus, covering the provision of training services based on the PC-7 MKX platform.
Fully Integrated Training System
The PC-7 MKX programme delivers a complete, end-to-end training solution extending well beyond the aircraft itself. The system includes state-of-the-art simulators, computer-based training platforms, and mission planning and debriefing systems, ensuring seamless continuity from classroom instruction to live flight operations.
This integrated approach enables a highly efficient and consistent training pipeline while reducing overall lifecycle costs and increasing training effectiveness.
Infrastructure and Long-Term Support
Together with Belgian partners Sabena Engineering and AG Real Estate, Pilatus will deliver new and upgraded infrastructure at Bevekom/Beauvechain Air Force Base. The partnership also ensures full operational and in-service support for the aircraft and associated systems over the next 20 years.
Belgian industry will play a central role in both the construction and ongoing maintenance of facilities, as well as in providing comprehensive in-service support, reinforcing national industrial participation in the programme.
Entry Into Service
Pilot training is planned to commence in 2028, following the completion of infrastructure upgrades, delivery of flight simulators, and instructor familiarisation with the new training system.
With this decision, Belgium joins the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force and the French Air and Space Force, both of which selected the PC-7 MKX Training System in late 2024.
Industry and Executive Commentary
Markus Bucher, CEO of Pilatus, said:“We are proud to welcome Belgian Defence as a new Pilatus customer and the third European air force to select the PC-7 MKX. This milestone reinforces the trust placed in our training systems and highlights our commitment to supporting air forces globally with state-of-the-art solutions.”
Ioannis Papachristofilou, Vice President Government Aviation at Pilatus, added:“This contract is based on a services business model that allows Belgian Defence to benefit from a comprehensive fully integrated training system, while ensuring long-term financial predictability. We look forward to serving Belgian Defence together with our Belgian industrial partners and providing a leading-edge training capability.”
New Smart Cockpit
The PC-7 MKX features a next-generation Smart Cockpit built around the Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics suite. Combining Pilatus’ extensive training expertise with Garmin’s advanced digital architecture, the cockpit provides an intuitive and highly reliable training environment from day one.
This marks the first integration of the G3000 with custom user-defined displays, enabling a flexible and adaptable platform specifically tailored to military training requirements. By uniting Pilatus’ proven training philosophy with Garmin’s open architecture, the PC-7 MKX establishes a new benchmark for next-generation military pilot training.
