In late November, the RAAF deployed three P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base Butterworth, near Penang. From this forward operating location, the aircraft conducted missions over the north-east Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.

Over a two-week period, RAAF P-8A crews collaborated closely with RMAF personnel on mission planning, embarked members of the Malaysian Armed Forces on surveillance sorties, and shared maritime surveillance information to improve situational awareness across the region.

Operation Gateway is one of the Australian Defence Force’s longest-running operations, having commenced in 1981. The operation plays a vital role in monitoring shipping activity and identifying potential security risks across strategically important sea lanes.

Chief of Joint Operations Command, Vice Admiral Justin Jones AO CSC RAN, said Operation Gateway underscores Australia’s enduring commitment to regional security. “Operation Gateway is a leading example of our long-standing commitment to working with partners to ensure security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” Vice Admiral Jones said.

He highlighted the significance of the operational area, noting that the Indian Ocean is now the world’s busiest and most strategically important shipping corridor, accounting for half of global container traffic and two-thirds of oil shipments transiting the region.

“Operation Gateway contributes maritime domain awareness in an area that is critical to Australia’s security and sea lines of communication,” he said.

The deployment forms part of the Malaysia–Australia Joint Defence Program, enabling bilateral engagement, information sharing and increased interoperability between the RAAF and the Malaysian Armed Forces.

Personnel from RAAF No. 92 Wing, based at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia, regularly deploy to RMAF Base Butterworth in support of this long-standing regional security mission.
