Hanwha Systems, Hanwha Ocean, and Hanwha Power Systems have signed a joint research agreement with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) at Gastech 2025 in Milan to tackle evolving U.S. maritime cybersecurity regulations, including U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) requirements for U.S.-flagged vessels.
This collaboration accelerates Hanwha’s entry into the U.S. commercial shipping market while reinforcing its leadership in global maritime cybersecurity standards. ABS’s involvement adds credibility and opens the door for broader international adoption.
Advancing Maritime Cybersecurity Solutions
The partnership will:
- Analyse U.S. maritime cybersecurity regulations
- Develop vessel-specific security frameworks
- Expand IACS UR E26-based technologies
- Strengthen real-time threat detection and incident response
- Enhance cyber resilience across multiple vessel types
A Hanwha Systems executive noted: “Cybersecurity is now as critical to safe operations as navigation and propulsion. Through our collaboration with ABS, we will deliver trusted, cyber-resilient solutions to shipowners.”
World’s First ABS AiP for Vessel Cyber Resilience
At Gastech 2025, Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean also received the world’s first ABS Approval in Principle (AiP) under the IACS UR E26 framework for an operational vessel. This milestone validates integrated, ship-wide resilience against cyber threats such as hacking, DDoS, and ransomware.
The AiP follows Hanwha Systems’ ABS Type Approval (TA) in January 2025 under IACS UR E27 for its SecuAider solution. Securing AiP within eight months highlights Hanwha’s capability to embed full-vessel cyber defence from the build stage.
Hanwha’s Position in Global Cybersecurity
With the combined strengths of Hanwha Systems, Hanwha Ocean, and Hanwha Power Systems, the group is reinforcing its status as a frontrunner in the global maritime cybersecurity market, delivering secure, resilient, and future-ready solutions for smart shipping.
